ZESCO United Thrash Mines United 5-0 to Maintain Super League Momentum

ZESCO United produced a dominant performance in the MTN Super League with a commanding 5-0 victory over newly promoted Mines United in a Week 7 fixture at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Sunday.

Striker Amine Hiver fired a first-half brace to put the hosts in control before the floodgates opened in the second half. Mines United defender Makenge Makabaniso turned the ball into his own net in the 54th minute, before Chanda Mukuka and Freddy Michael completed the rout — the latter converting from the penalty spot in the 78th minute.

The result means ZESCO have now scored 10 goals in their last two matches in all competitions, sending a strong message about their attacking prowess.

Speaking after the match, ZESCO first assistant coach Emmanuel Siwale praised the team’s performance but emphasized the importance of consistency and finishing.

“I’m happy not because of the goals but because we’ve won. What was important today was to win this game. It was one of the most difficult despite scoring,” Siwale said.

Reflecting on his team’s missed opportunities, Siwale noted:

“The five goals we scored were more difficult than the chances we missed. Imagine if we had taken those sure chances—we could have scored more, which is important because sometimes the league or even positions are decided by goal difference.”

The coach also hailed the squad’s defensive solidity after securing back-to-back clean sheets, but warned that the team cannot afford to relax during the upcoming international break.

“The task ahead is huge. For us, there is no break—we have to keep working. I’m happy that we are not conceding, but we must improve on finishing.”

On Hiver’s brace, Siwale refused to single out individuals, instead highlighting the collective effort.

“Every player we have is important. Those who stepped up today delivered. Football is about teamwork, not individuals, and I’m pleased with how the team is working together.”

The victory lifts ZESCO to eighth place with 10 points from five matches, boosting their confidence ahead of tougher assignments after the break.
