Zambia’s Melissa Muyambango Shines at Kenya Aquatics Championship

Zambia’s young swimming sensation Melissa Muyambango made waves at the Kenya Aquatics National Swimming and Open Water Championships, clinching two medals during the high-profile event held from 30 May to 1 June at the Kasarani Aquatic Centre in Nairobi.
Representing LICS Warriors, Muyambango stood out among over 445 swimmers from across six countries, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, and Madagascar, who gathered for the three-day championship. The event, organized by Kenya Aquatics, brought together more than sixty teams, including top schools and clubs from the region such as Gators Swim Club Kampala, Aqua Shark Fin, and Silverfin Academy.
Melissa competed in nine races, demonstrating resilience, discipline, and elite skill throughout the tournament. Her standout performances earned her a silver medal in the 100m backstroke and a bronze in the 200m breaststroke, in addition to clocking several personal bests.
The championship also featured top African swimmers, including Kenya’s Olympians Maria Brunlehner and Mohammed Ridhwan. Brunlehner, a 2019 African Games bronze medalist, and Ridhwan, a triple national record holder, used the gala as a key qualifier for the upcoming World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, scheduled for 11 July to 3 August 2025.
The competition not only served as a qualifier for global championships but also as a platform for emerging swimmers like Zambia’s Muyambango to gain international exposure and experience.
As Zambia continues to invest in sports development, Melissa’s success serves as an inspiring reminder of the country’s potential in the world of competitive swimming.
