Zambia U20 Women’s Team Gearing Up for COSAFA Showdown – Assistant Coach Charity Nthala Confident Ahead of South Africa Opener

Zambia U20 Women’s National Team assistant coach Charity Nthala says the team is in high spirits and steadily progressing as they prepare to defend their title at the upcoming COSAFA Women’s U20 Championship.
Speaking after Monday’s training session at NASDEC Sports Complex, Coach Nthala confirmed that all 29 players called into camp have reported, with one player briefly excused due to school examinations. She expressed satisfaction with the players’ performance and attitude so far.
“Training is going well. The players are responding positively to the sessions,” she said.
Zambia has been drawn in a challenging group alongside Angola and rivals South Africa, whom they will face in the opening match. Nthala acknowledged the competitive nature of the group but remains optimistic.
“The group is tricky. We know how South Africa plays, and they know how we play. But we’re confident in our preparations. Some of our players were part of the U17 COSAFA team, and that experience has boosted the squad,” she explained.
As defending champions, Zambia enters the tournament with a target on their back. Nthala admitted there is pressure, but emphasized the team’s focus and determination.
“Yes, pressure is there because all eyes are on Team Zambia. We must stay grounded and not underestimate any opponent.”
She also highlighted the importance of the tournament as a preparatory stage for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
“This COSAFA tournament is key in identifying and sharpening the players who will help us qualify for the World Cup,” Nthala noted.
This years’ tournament will take place in Windhoek, Namibia from July 4 to 13 with Zambia openning their campaign against South Africa on July 5, 2025 at 15:00hrs, a clash expected to set the tone for the tournament.
