Zambia to Face Hosts Morocco in WAFCON 2024 Opener as CAF Releases Full Schedule
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially released the match schedule for the highly anticipated TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to take place in Morocco from 5 to 26 July 2025, and Zambia’s Copper Queens will have the honour of kicking off the tournament.
Zambia will face hosts Morocco in the opening match on Saturday, 5 July at the newly built Olympic Stadium in Rabat. Kick-off is scheduled for 22:00 local time (20:00 GMT), marking a high-profile start to Africa’s premier women’s football competition.
The Copper Queens, placed in Group A, will also face tough challenges from Senegal and DR Congo in what promises to be a highly competitive group.
CAF revealed that the tournament will feature 26 matches over three weeks, culminating in the grand finale on 26 July at the same Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
Other major fixtures include Nigeria, the most decorated team in WAFCON history, taking on Tunisia on 6 July, while defending champions South Africa begin their title defence against Ghana on 7 July.
Zambia’s opening fixture against Morocco presents a crucial opportunity to set the tone for a strong campaign, as the team looks to build on recent successes and stake a claim among Africa’s elite.
This year’s edition is expected to break new ground in terms of global viewership, stadium attendance, and digital engagement. CAF has confirmed that all matches will be broadcast live in high definition through various international TV partners, with fans encouraged to follow behind-the-scenes content on CAF’s digital platforms using the hashtag #TotalEnergiesWAFCON2024.
