Zambia Scoops Three Bronze Medals on Opening Day of Tshwane African Judo Open

Zambia has made a promising start at the inaugural Tshwane African Judo Open, securing three bronze medals on the first day of action at the Rembrandt Hall in Pretoria. The competition, which officially began today, is drawing judokas from across Africa and beyond, with 67 participants (46 men and 21 women) from various continents including Europe, Oceania, and the Pan-American region.

Representing Zambia with pride, Steven Mung’andu (-73kg), Rita Kabinda (-63kg), and Simon Zulu each fought their way to bronze in their respective categories, delivering strong performances against tough continental opponents.

Team Zambia entered the tournament with confidence and preparation, according to head coach Boas Munyonga, who earlier declared the team “focused and ready to face Africa’s best.” That focus was evident as six of Zambia’s eight athletes took to the mat on Day One, with half of them returning with medals.

Not all matches ended in victory for Zambia, however. Filet Musonda and John Kapungwe gave valiant efforts but missed out on the podium. In a heartbreaking moment, Japhet Musonda suffered an injury during the quarterfinals and was unable to continue.

As the tournament continues, attention now shifts to Andrew Sande (90kg), who is set to compete tomorrow, and Sasha Kapumpa (-78kg), scheduled to compete on Saturday. The Zambian team remains hopeful for more medals before the tournament concludes.

Meanwhile, the African Judo Union (AJU) has praised the organization of the event. During the draw on June 25, AJU Vice-President Alfred Foloko, representing AJU President Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, thanked Judo South Africa and its President Temba Hlasho for the warm hospitality and excellent arrangements. He also extended best wishes to referees undergoing continental and international exams during the event.

The Tshwane African Judo Open marks an important step for judo in Southern Africa, offering athletes a chance to earn world ranking points without the burden of long-distance travel, and further highlighting the region’s growing role in international judo.

The Judo Association of Zambia has congratulated the medalists and urged the entire team to continue competing with courage and national pride.
