Zambia Stung by Zimbabwe in Battle of Zambezi First Leg

The Zambia Rugby National Team faced a heavy defeat in the first leg of the Battle of Zambezi, succumbing to a dominant 70-15 loss against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club on Sunday afternoon. The resounding victory gives the home side a significant advantage heading into the return fixture.

Despite the disappointing scoreline, Zambia captain Ali Bhika called for mental fortitude from his squad as they look ahead to the second leg. He acknowledged Zimbabwe’s superior performance on the day, stating, “An unfavorable result for us. I think our discipline really cost us. We conceded a red card in the first, I think maybe 10 minutes, and we were playing a man short for 80 minutes. We also conceded similar cards later on in the game, and you know, I think that really cost us. Against a clinical and sharp side like Zimbabwe, you know, you pay for it.”

Bhika commended Zimbabwe for their preparation and execution in front of their home crowd. “All credit goes to Zimbabwe. I think they prepared well, they’re well-structured, and it calls for us to go back to the drawing board and restrategize for the home game.”

Reflecting on the areas where Zambia fell short, Bhika pointed to defensive lapses and costly disciplinary errors. “I think our defense was off, making tactical errors. The red card, it’s not the end of the game. You know, we lost a man in the first 10 minutes, so if we had the right mindset, confidence, and had the fight, we could have produced a better result.”

However, the Zambian captain did find a glimmer of positivity amidst the setback. “I think we managed to score a few tries, which was a positive on our end.” Despite this, he reiterated the crucial need for a stronger mental approach in the return leg. “But you know, we really need to work on our mental strength because the red card, it’s not the end of the game.”

The emphatic victory for Zimbabwe underscores their strength and preparation, while Zambia will need to undertake a significant reassessment ahead of the second leg. Bhika’s emphasis on mental resilience will be key as the team aims to regroup, address their defensive vulnerabilities, and formulate a strategy to overturn the substantial deficit on home soil. The Battle of Zambezi is far from over, and Zambia will be looking to show a much-improved performance in the return fixture.
