Sasha Kapumpa Strikes Gold as Zambia Closes African Judo Open 2025 With Five Medals

Zambia’s campaign at the African Judo Open 2025 came to a triumphant close on Saturday as rising star Sasha Kapumpa delivered a sensational performance to claim the country’s only gold medal of the tournament. Her victory elevated Zambia’s total medal tally to five, following earlier bronze medal wins by teammates Rita Kabinda, Simon Zulu, Andrew Kaswanga Sande, and Steven Mung’andu.

Competing in the women’s +70kg category, Kapumpa displayed sheer power and tactical brilliance, defeating South Africa’s Madison Lombaard with a decisive ippon in the final bout. Her golden triumph marks Zambia’s first top-podium finish at this year’s championship, and further cements her status as one of the nation’s brightest young judokas.

“I’m really grateful for this medal because I worked very hard for it,” said Kapumpa after her win. “We’ve been training since last year, and I’ve finally gotten this reward. I truly appreciate OYDC Zambia and the Teulings Youth Sports League for putting me on this stage and giving me the opportunity to represent Zambia.”

Zambia’s Acting High Commissioner to South Africa, Ms. Inonge Mwenya, was full of praise for the entire Zambian team and their achievements at the tournament.

“I’m absolutely delighted with the performance the team has put up. We are very encouraged. Congratulations for bagging those five medals, continue to raise the Zambian flag high. We are proud of you, and may God continue to bless you all.”

Kapumpa’s victory also highlighted the critical role played by local sports development programs such as the Teulings Youth Sports League, run through OYDC Zambia, in nurturing world-class talent.

“We are very grateful first to Zambia Judo and to Mr. Teulings,” said Benjamin Tembo, Acting CEO of OYDC Zambia. “Today, at least one of our athletes from the Teulings League has won a gold medal at the international level. We will continue to support and expose more young athletes to international platforms. Once again, thank you to Mr. Teulings.”

The African Judo Open 2025 marked a significant step forward for Zambian judo, showcasing the impact of long-term investment in grassroots talent development.
