Rugby Rivals Collide in the Zambezi Challenge Opener

Harare, Zimbabwe – May 4, 2025
The Harare Sports Club is set to come alive this afternoon as Zimbabwe and Zambia renew one of African rugby’s most spirited rivalries in the opening match of the 2025 Zambezi Series, also known as the Zambezi Challenge.
Dubbed the Battle of the Zambezi, this tri-nation tournament featuring Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Botswana kicks off with more than just points at stake. National pride, continental rankings, and World Cup aspirations all hang in the balance.
For Zimbabwe, the series is a proving ground. Head coach Piet Benade has named a largely home-based 40-man squad, aiming to assess local talent ahead of the Rugby Africa Cup in July, which serves as the qualifying pathway to the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
“We want to activate Test rugby regionally and give our local players a proper platform,” said Benade. “Zambia’s always a tough side, and we only narrowly beat them twice last year. This game will be no different.”
One of the players keen to make a statement is Junior Sables graduate Trevor Gurwe. The 22-year-old winger is eyeing a permanent return to the national team setup and believes the stakes have never been higher.
“Test rugby demands more than just raw talent. You need trust, discipline, and versatility,” Gurwe said. “Zambia are no pushovers. Every time we meet, they’re better. This isn’t just a game anymore—it’s a true rivalry.”
Across the Zambezi, the Zambian squad is also brimming with confidence. Captain Ali Bhika says his team is out to make history in Harare.
“Our preparations have been intense. We’ve looked at our weaknesses from past matches and addressed them,” Bhika told The Lusaka Star. “This time, we’re focused from start to finish.”
Vice-captain Bethrock Sikaona echoed that sentiment, highlighting the team’s depth and renewed energy. “We’ve blended new blood with seasoned players. Morale is high, and we’re ready for a tough battle.”
Kick-off is at 14:30 local time at Harare Sports Club’s Machinery Exchange Grounds. As fans from both sides flood in, the match promises to be a celebration of Southern African rugby – fierce, fast, and unforgettable.
Two nations. One river. One winner.
Let the Battle of the Zambezi begin.
