Prince Mumba: “We Are in the CHAN to Compete and Set Standards”

Chipolopolo midfielder Prince Mumba has made it clear that the national team’s ambitions at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) go beyond mere participation.

Speaking to FAZ Media, Mumba emphasized the squad’s readiness and determination ahead of the competition:

“So far, so good. We’re getting in shape and getting better every day,” he said. “We’re not just a pushover. We’re in a good group and we’re very, very much capable.”

Zambia has been drawn into Group A along with DR Congo, Kenya, Morocco, and Angola. The Chipolopolo begin their CHAN campaign with a match against DR Congo on August 7 at 15:00 hours.

This edition of CHAN, officially the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship, is set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from August 2 to 30, 2025, marking a historic first-time collaboration between three East African nations in staging such a major continental football event.

Mumba, making his CHAN debut, stressed that the tournament serves as a preparatory stage for larger challenges:

“We take each competition as it comes, but our goal is to go there, compete, and set standards for the bigger competition in December,” referring to the Africa Cup of Nations 2025.

Describing this moment as a proud milestone, he urged fans to retain faith:

“This is my first time and it’s such a great feeling. Let’s continue believing, continue trusting the process. Better days are ahead, and I believe these are the better days.”

As captain of Power Dynamos, Zambia’s reigning Super League champions, Mumba brings leadership and club form into the national setup.

Zambia will be looking to make a powerful statement in Group A, using CHAN as a platform to re-establish themselves among the continent’s elite in home-based football, and to build momentum ahead of AFCON.
