Mweetwa Challenges Sports Ministry to Reclaim AFCON Glory, Aim for World Cup Qualification

Cornelius Mweetwa has issued a bold challenge to the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts, urging it to raise the bar for Zambian football by reclaiming the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and securing historic qualification for the FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on behalf of President Hakainde Hichilema at the 2025 Africa Public Service Day commemorations held at Piazza, East Park, Hon. Mweetwa delivered a rousing message as he toured the Ministry’s exhibition stand. He emphasized the unifying and transformative power of sport, particularly football, in fostering national pride and collective identity.

“This country has celebrated AFCON before, we must do it again. But more than that, we must dare to dream of the World Cup,” declared Hon. Mweetwa, drawing a wave of applause from officials and spectators.

He urged the Ministry to intensify its strategies and investments to improve the performance of the Men’s Senior National Football Team, the Chipolopolo, and to deliver measurable results both on the African continent and the global stage.

Highlighting the significance of sports in Zambia’s development agenda, Hon. Mweetwa noted that football holds an unmatched ability to inspire hope, unify citizens, and boost the country’s international standing.

“With the right commitment, planning, and ambition, the long-cherished dream of seeing Zambia at the World Cup is possible,” he added.

The 2025 Africa Public Service Day is being commemorated under the theme: “Enhancing the Agility and Resilience of Public Institutions to Achieve Equitable Governance and Rapidly Address Historical Service Delivery Gaps.” The event has drawn participation from various ministries and stakeholders showcasing initiatives aimed at improving public service delivery.

In response to the challenge, the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts pledged renewed dedication to elevating the Chipolopolo’s competitive edge. Ministry officials expressed optimism about the team’s future, stating that Zambia can once again rise to the summit of African football while breaking new ground on the world stage.

As Zambia sets its sights on AFCON success and a historic World Cup berth, Hon. Mweetwa’s call serves as a timely rallying cry for national ambition and excellence in sport.
