Mweemba Challenges Power, Zesco to Build on CAF Wins

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has hailed Power Dynamos and Zesco United for advancing to the next round of their respective CAF competitions, describing the achievement as a positive step for Zambian football.
Power Dynamos booked their place in the final preliminary round of the CAF Champions League after edging Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas on penalties, while Zesco United sailed past Gabonese side Canon 105 with a 5-2 aggregate victory in the CAF Confederation Cup.
FAZ president Keith Mweemba said the progress of the two clubs reflected a resurgence in Zambian football’s competitiveness on the continent.
“On behalf of my executive and the entire football community, I wish to congratulate Zesco United and Power Dynamos on qualifying to the next round of their CAF competitions. We are more excited with these victories because of the struggles our teams have endured on the continent in the last few seasons,” said Mweemba.
He emphasized the need for consistency if Zambia is to return to its former continental strength. “This should not just be a one-off achievement but a regular occurrence for Zambia to be back at the level where we commanded four slots.”
Power Dynamos will now face Ugandan champions Vipers SC, while Zesco United are set to meet Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy. Mweemba urged both clubs to prepare thoroughly for their decisive fixtures.

“These victories are not just wins for Power Dynamos and Zesco United but for the entire country. We have always maintained that when we do things the right way, good results will follow,” he said, noting that Power Dynamos have the potential to replicate their 1990 continental success with proper support.
Mweemba also congratulated the Zambia Under-20 Women’s National Team for qualifying to the third round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers after beating Burundi 4-1 on aggregate. The junior Copper Queens will face Uganda next.
