MMA Zambia Secures Government Backing for World Championships in Georgia

MMA Zambia has confirmed that the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts will fully support a 15-member delegation heading to the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) World Championships later this month in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The package includes flights, accommodation, registration fees, and nutrition for 12 athletes and three coaching staff, along with travel arrangements for two ministerial representatives and two journalists. The comprehensive support will allow Zambia’s fighters to compete on the global stage with dignity and focus.

The Ministry’s decision underscores the growing recognition of Mixed Martial Arts as one of Zambia’s fastest-rising sports. Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe, National Sports Council CEO Sombwa Musunsa, and Acting Director of Sports Gibson Munyaule are among the senior figures backing the initiative, reflecting the government’s commitment to elevating Zambia’s profile in international combat sports.

In a statement, MMA Zambia expressed gratitude to the Ministry, athletes, coaches, and supporters whose advocacy ensured the team’s participation. The organization highlighted the values of discipline, respect, and resilience—principles drawn from martial arts and the bushido code—while linking them to President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision of perseverance and honor as foundations of success.

“This is more than competition—it’s an opportunity to showcase Zambian talent and inspire young athletes nationwide,” MMA Zambia said. “With sustained collaboration, Zambia can emerge as a global force in combat sports.”

The IMMAF World Championships in Tbilisi will feature top fighters from across the globe and provide Zambian athletes with vital exposure and experience at the highest level of the sport.
