Local Solutions Key as FAZ Rethinks Sponsorship Strategy Following SuperSport Exit

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is shifting its strategic focus toward homegrown solutions in football sponsorship, following the recent withdrawal of SuperSport from broadcasting the MTN Super League.

Speaking at the 2025 MTN Super League Awards Gala held at Garden Court Hotel in Kitwe on Friday evening, FAZ President Keith Mweemba described the broadcaster’s exit as a wake-up call that has exposed the vulnerabilities of relying heavily on foreign partnerships.

“The football family is alive to the challenges presented by the withdrawal of SuperSport from the sponsorship of the MTN Super League,” Mweemba said. “While we are on the verge of providing a monumental pronouncement on the way forward, we cannot pretend that the SuperSport withdrawal did not open our eyes to the perils of outside sponsorships.”

FAZ has pledged to pursue a more sustainable model anchored in domestic partnerships that will empower local businesses and institutions to invest in and benefit from the growth of Zambian football.

“We remain hopeful that the next phase will incorporate a more domestically sourced solution,” Mweemba stated. “This presents an opportunity for us to cure some of the gaps witnessed under our partnership with SuperSport.”

SuperSport’s departure marks the end of an era in which the South African broadcaster played a major role in showcasing Zambian football across the continent. While the move raises concerns about media exposure and revenue streams, FAZ sees it as a turning point for local innovation and resilience.

Mweemba assured stakeholders that a new partnership announcement is imminent and urged the football community to embrace the next chapter with unity and purpose.
