“Happy and Honoured” – Phiri Reacts to Zambia Recall

Red Arrows midfielder Saddam Phiri has been rewarded with a national team call-up after making history in the 2025-26 MTN Super League.
The 32-year-old became the first player to score a hat-trick in the 2025-26 campaign when he netted three goals against Mines United in a Week Two fixture. His standout performance caught the eye of Chipolopolo coach Avram Grant, who last week unveiled a 31-member provisional squad for the September 8 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Morocco.
Phiri expressed his gratitude after his inclusion, posting: “Am always honored to represent the country. Every opportunity to serve is a blessing I won’t take for granted. Grateful for the chance to make a difference and bring pride to my nation.”
Speaking during a media briefing at Football House in Lusaka, Grant said the squad will later be trimmed to 24 players. He also confirmed the return of Italy-based winger Lameck Banda, who is back to full fitness after a recent injury layoff.
“The return of some players gives us healthy competition in the team, which is important as we prepare for such a big game,” Grant said.
The provisional squad includes experienced campaigners such as Leicester City striker Patson Daka, winger Fashion Sakala of Saudi Arabia’s Al-Fayha FC, and midfielder Kings Kangwa of Hapoel Be’er Sheva.
Zambia will host Morocco in Ndola in a crucial Group E encounter as they chase qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
