Grace Chanda Eager to Make Her Mark in Third WAFCON Appearance

Copper Queens midfielder Grace Chanda has expressed her excitement and determination ahead of her third appearance at the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024, which kicks off next week in Morocco.

Speaking to FAZ Media, Chanda reflected on the journey back to the national team after a period on the sidelines and highlighted her motivation to help Zambia go further in this year’s tournament.

“I’m so excited because it’s not easy to play three tournaments. I’m really happy to be back,” Chanda said. “I missed a lot of games and preparations, but I’ve been working hard and I’m ready to give my best.”

Zambia have been drawn into what many are calling the tournament’s “group of death,” with tough matches lined up, including the highly anticipated opener against host nation Morocco.

“Our group is hard, so we just have to work extra hard. Morocco is not an easy game—they are prepared, but we are also ready. The first game is so important and we need to go for all three points,” she emphasized.

Chanda, known for her creativity and tireless work ethic in midfield, believes the Copper Queens have unfinished business at this year’s WAFCON after a strong showing in 2022.

“The target this time is to finish what we left behind. Now we have a full squad, and we must push even harder to reach the top,” she said.

On a personal level, Chanda dedicated her efforts to her family and friends, who she says have been her biggest supporters.

“Even when I wasn’t playing, I kept working hard. This is for my family and friends—they always encourage me. I’ll give 100% for them and for myself,” she added.

Chanda also had a message for the fans:

“Just keep supporting us. We’ll deliver the points and the happiness. We are ready for the tournament. Thank you so much.”

The Copper Queens kick off their WAFCON 2024 campaign on July 5 against Morocco, with fans across Zambia rallying behind the team as they aim for glory on the continental stage.
