Government to Focus on Women’s Football and Community Clubs

The Zambian government has reaffirmed its commitment to making football more inclusive by pledging increased support for the development of women’s football, grassroots programs, and community-based clubs across the country.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Hon. Elvis C. Nkandu, MP, during the 2024/2025 MTN/FAZ Super League Awards ceremony held at Garden Court Hotel in Kitwe on Friday night.
“As we look to the future, we must also prioritise the growth of women’s football, grassroots development and uplift community-based clubs,” said Minister Nkandu. “Let us ensure that the game belongs to everyone, regardless of gender, background or location.”
In addition to supporting the women’s game, the government also aims to strengthen grassroots structures and invest in local football clubs, which the Minister described as the “lifeblood of national talent development.”
“These community clubs are where our future stars begin their journey,” he said. “If we want to compete at the highest levels, we must build strong foundations at the local level.”
The awards ceremony brought together football stakeholders from across the country to honour the best performers of the MTN Super League season. But beyond the trophies and accolades, the event highlighted deeper conversations around the future of football in Zambia.
With growing support from government the country is now poised to expand access to football and strengthen its player pipeline in underserved areas, especially among women and youth.
“This is how we build a football legacy,” Minister Nkandu concluded. “By making sure the game reaches every corner of Zambia and empowers every child who dreams of playing.”
