FIFA Lifts Suspension on Congolese Football Association

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has officially lifted the suspension imposed on the Congolese Football Association (FECOFOOT), reinstating its full rights as a member of the global football governing body.

According to Circular No. 1933 issued by FIFA and signed by Secretary General Mattias Grafström, the decision was made by the Bureau of the FIFA Council on 14 May 2025. The move restores FECOFOOT’s membership rights as defined under Article 13 of the FIFA Statutes, with immediate effect.

“All of FECOFOOT’s membership rights…have been reinstated with immediate effect,” the statement read.

The lifting of the suspension allows Congolese national and club teams to once again participate in international competitions. Additionally, FECOFOOT officials and members will regain access to development programmes, training, and courses provided by FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

“FIFA member associations may again enter into sporting contact with FECOFOOT and/or its teams,” the circular added, signaling a full reintegration of Congolese football into the international community.

The suspension, details of which were not reiterated in the announcement, had previously barred FECOFOOT from all FIFA-related activities, including competitions and development support.

This decision is expected to be met with relief and optimism in the Republic of the Congo as the country’s football ecosystem resumes normal operations at both domestic and international levels.
