FAZ President Mweemba Eyes World Cup Glory After U-17 COSAFA Triumph

Following the Zambia Under-17 Women’s National Team’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Malawi in the COSAFA Championship final, Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Keith Mweemba has shifted focus to preparing the team for a historic FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign.

In a statement, Mweemba praised the Copper Princesses for securing a record third COSAFA title and delivering him his first trophy since taking office just a week ago.

“Congratulations to the team, technical bench and support staff for earning Zambia a record third COSAFA title at U-17 level for women,” Mweemba said. “As an executive and the entire football family, we are very proud of you.”

But beyond celebrating the milestone, Mweemba emphasized the importance of turning attention to the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, set to take place in Morocco from 17 October to 8 November.

“It is now time to focus on the forthcoming assignments, particularly the FIFA World Cup,” he stated. “Let this inspire the team to aspire for greater things especially at the World Cup.”

Zambia, already qualified for the global tournament, will be making its third appearance at the U-17 World Cup, following participations in 2014 and 2024. With back-to-back regional titles in 2024 and 2025 and a core of experienced young talent, expectations are building for a strong showing on the world stage.

The FAZ executive has reiterated its commitment to providing full support to the team, ensuring they are ready not just to compete, but to challenge for major honours on the international stage.
