David 'Sniper' Mwale's WBC Triumph Earns Government Praise

The Zambian Government has congratulated David ‘Sniper’ Mwale for making history by clinching the coveted World Boxing Council (WBC) Bantamweight World Title in a thrilling bout held at the New Government Complex in Lusaka.

Mwale delivered a dominant performance on Saturday night, defeating Ghana’s Nelson Michael over 12 intense rounds to secure the prestigious title. The victory cements his status as one of Zambia’s boxing greats and makes him the first male Zambian boxer since the legendary Lottie Mwale to win a WBC title.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts, Minister Hon. Elvis C. Nkandu, MP, applauded Mwale’s triumph and described it as a moment of national pride.

“David’s victory is a proud moment for our country. You cannot talk about modern boxing without the mention of his name,” Minister Nkandu stated. “As the New Dawn Government, we continue to emphasize that there is no minor sport. Disciplines once overlooked are now producing major results, and we remain committed to ensuring that all sports receive fair and equal support through the national budget.”

Mwale, who is also a serving police officer, has inspired hope for many in Zambia’s growing sports community, particularly among young and aspiring boxers. His victory is being hailed not just as a personal milestone, but also as a symbol of Zambia’s resurgence in global boxing.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting athletes across all sporting disciplines, pledging continued investment and opportunities to help Zambians compete at the highest level.
