Copper Queens Gear Up for Crucial Friendlies Ahead of WAFCON

The Copper Queens have intensified preparations ahead of two critical international friendly matches as part of their build-up to the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with players expressing optimism and unity in camp.

Zambia will take on reigning African champions South Africa on May 31st, followed by a clash against Botswana on June 3rd. Both matches are scheduled to be played in South Africa and are expected to provide the Copper Queens with vital match fitness and tactical refinement before the continental showpiece.

The Zambian side has been drawn in Group A at WAFCON, alongside hosts Morocco, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, a challenging pool that requires the team to be at its best.

Speaking after a training session, midfielder Maweta Chilenga said the mood in camp is upbeat as the team builds momentum.

“Preparations are going on very well. The atmosphere in camp is very high,” Chilenga said. “We are going to face one of the biggest teams in Africa, they won the championship. So, it’s going to give us a big boost going into the WAFCON. Botswana is also a very strong team, and they’ll give us a good game.”

Chilenga added that the team is learning a lot from working alongside senior squad members, and the competitive spirit in camp is helping drive performance levels higher.

Defender Esther Siamfuko emphasized the importance of unity and focus, particularly as the team blends experienced players with rising talents.

“When we come here, there’s nothing like ‘I’m the old player’ or ‘I’m the new player,’” she said. “We just have to accommodate each other, understand one another, and speak one language.”

Siamfuko also noted that the friendly matches will offer valuable experience and urged new players to step up and justify their place in the national squad.

Meanwhile, midfielder Natashya Nanyangwe said the team is determined to go all the way in Morocco after finishing third in the last WAFCON.

“Our goal is to win. Last time we came third, and this time we are going to do our best because we want to get the cup,” Nanyangwe said. “Training is going smoothly and everyone is putting in the work. Our younger sisters won the COSAFA tournament back-to-back, and that success has pushed us to work even harder to make the country proud.”

With morale high and preparations in full swing, the Copper Queens are eyeing a strong showing at the upcoming tournament, aiming to cement their place among Africa’s elite in women’s football.
