Coach Nthala Hails Tactical Shift in Zambia U20 Women’s Victory

Zambia’s U20 Women’s National Team coach, Charity Nthala, has hailed her players’ resilience and adaptability after they secured a crucial 2-1 away victory over Burundi in the first leg of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier at Intwari Stadium in Bujumbura on Friday, September 19, 2025.
The Young Copper Queens took the lead in the 44th minute through Mwila Mufunte, but Burundi responded strongly in the second half, equalising in the 70th minute through Rukiya Bizimana. With pressure mounting, Zambia needed inspiration, and it came late when Ruth Muwowo struck in the 88th minute to restore Zambia’s advantage and seal the victory.
Speaking in her post-match reaction, Nthala revealed that the team’s main objective was simple but crucial: “to bring home the win so that when we return, we will have done our best and be able to focus on our goals.”
Despite a spirited display from their opponents, who she admitted “played a good game and gave us a good run”, the Copper Princesses were forced to dig deep after losing control of the match in the second half.
“The opponents dominated the lead, especially in the second half, and we had to make changes on the field,” she explained.
One of the tactical adjustments involved addressing the imbalance in attack. Nthala noted that her team’s front wing was weak, and in response, they switched play to their stronger side, a move that ultimately swung the game back in Zambia’s favour.
The coach also highlighted the importance of preparation in their success, pointing out that she had studied their rivals carefully through match footage. “I watched videos of them playing other teams, and that helped us know what to expect,” she said.
With the victory secured, Nthala expressed confidence that the team would now shift focus to the broader objectives of their campaign, buoyed by a display of grit and tactical awareness.
