Chama Predicts “Interesting” Clash as Zambia Arrive in Zanzibar for World Cup Qualifier

Zambian midfielder Clatous Chama says Wednesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Group E qualifier against Tanzania will be an “interesting” encounter, expressing confidence that the team will respond positively and use the match as part of their preparation for future tournaments.
The Singida Big Stars playmaker, who was among the first foreign-based players to join camp in Zanzibar, said facing Tanzania always brings a competitive edge given the history between the two nations.
“Playing against Tanzania has always been interesting for us. I remember we played them at the Africa Cup in Ivory Coast and it ended 1-1, then they beat us 1-0 in Lusaka,” Chama said. “It’s not going to be an easy match, especially since they are at home, but we are equal to the task.”
Chama emphasized that the team is taking the fixture seriously, viewing it as both a World Cup qualifier and a stepping stone toward this December’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
“This is a national team match, not just a friendly, so it’s a serious assignment. We want to show that we are ready for games of this magnitude,” he added.
Meanwhile, the first contingent of the Zambia Men’s National Team arrived safely in Zanzibar on Sunday ahead of the crucial tie. The 11-member local group, joined by Clatous Chama and Fashion Sakala, travelled from Lusaka aboard Ethiopian Airlines and are lodged at Blue Ocean Resort.
They have since linked up with Emmanuel Banda, Kings Kangwa, and Joseph Sabobo Banda, who arrived earlier. The team was received at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport by Deputy High Commissioner Anthony Bwalya and embassy staff.
Zambia face Tanzania on Wednesday night at Amani Stadium at 22:00 local time (21:00 CAT) in a match that could prove decisive in their World Cup qualification hopes.
