The Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has reaffirmed that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will go ahead as planned in Morocco, despite ongoing anti-government protests in the North African nation.

Addressing delegates at the annual CAF Executive Assembly in Kinshasa, Motsepe said the continental governing body remains fully committed to Morocco as the host nation, dismissing speculation of a possible venue change.

“We are absolutely confident the AFCON will go ahead as planned,” said Motsepe. “Morocco is Plan A, Morocco is Plan B, and Morocco is Plan C. CAF will co-operate and work with the government and all the citizens of Morocco to host the most successful AFCON in history.”

Morocco, which last hosted the AFCON in 1988, is set to stage the expanded 24-team tournament from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, across nine venues.

The assurance comes amid nationwide protests by young Moroccans demanding political reforms, improved healthcare and education, and an end to corruption and social inequality. Despite the unrest, CAF maintains that preparations for the continental showpiece are on course.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who attended the meeting, also expressed support for CAF’s decision, underscoring Morocco’s proven organizational capacity and football infrastructure.

Motsepe added that the focus is now on ensuring logistical readiness and maintaining close collaboration with Moroccan authorities to deliver what he called “a historic celebration of African football.”

Morocco had previously withdrawn from hosting the 2015 AFCON over Ebola concerns but is now positioned to make history as host of one of the most anticipated tournaments in modern African football.
