Benjamin Bush: The Visionary Behind MMA Zambia’s Rise on the Global Stage

From humble beginnings in Lusaka’s underserved communities to global recognition by the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF), Benjamin Bush has become one of African MMA’s most influential figures. Speaking to IMMAF, the founding president of MMA Zambia shared his remarkable journey of resilience, vision, and community-focused leadership.
Bush’s passion for the sport was shaped in London, where he trained under Jess Liaudin at Pancrase London and met future UFC star José Aldo—an encounter that sparked his dual love for MMA and storytelling. Inspired by Brazil’s Marlon Sandro, who used jiu-jitsu to steer youth away from violence, Bush returned to Zambia determined to replicate that model.
In Lusaka’s “Komboni” neighborhoods, he co-founded Ulemu Fight Academy, creating the Vulnerable Youth Programme (VYP) for over 200 children—most training for free. The VYP blends martial arts with life skills, tackling issues such as gender-based violence, drug abuse, and even media literacy to build stronger citizens.
Under Bush’s leadership, MMA Zambia gained government recognition in 2021 and became an official IMMAF member in 2020. He launched the Zambia National Amateur League (ZNAL), now one of Africa’s premier amateur MMA platforms. His tenure has produced standout athletes like Miracle Chipito, Africa’s top-ranked female flyweight, and Ken Sekeletu, EFC Featherweight Champion.
Support from partners such as 1xBet has enabled athlete rehabilitation and competitive success, with Zambia achieving a 70% win ratio against international opponents.
Bush, who stepped down as president in May 2025, plans to focus on grassroots development and Ulemu gym but remains an advisor. His dream: hosting the IMMAF Africa Championships in Livingstone with Victoria Falls as a backdrop.
“Sport and social mission can build something lasting from nothing,” Bush said. “Zambia’s young people deserve a future, and MMA is part of that journey.”
