Barbra Banda Named to NWSL Best XI for May, Chawinga Also Honored

Zambia’s Barbra Banda continues to make waves in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), earning a spot in the league’s Best XI of the Month for May, her third consecutive selection this season. The Orlando Pride forward was recognized after a historic month that saw her score the club’s first-ever hat trick in a dominant 3-1 win over Utah Royals FC on May 23.
The hat trick also cemented Banda’s name in Orlando Pride’s record books, as she surpassed U.S. star Alex Morgan to become the club’s second all-time leading scorer with 24 goals across all competitions.
The 24-year-old forward’s explosive pace, clinical finishing, and relentless work rate have made her one of the most feared attackers in the league. Her performances continue to turn heads globally and build excitement ahead of the 2025 Olympic qualifiers.
Also earning a place in the May Best XI is Malawi’s Temwa Chawinga, Banda’s Southern African counterpart and reigning NWSL MVP. Chawinga, who plays for Kansas City Current, closed out the month in red-hot form, scoring in three consecutive games. She was also named NWSL Player of the Month, further underlining her status as one of the league’s elite forwards.
Together, Banda and Chawinga are not just stars of African football but are now firmly established among the best in women’s football worldwide, lighting up the NWSL with flair, power, and consistency.
