Barbra Banda Eyes WAFCON Glory: “We Want to Make History”

As the countdown to the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) continues, Copper Queens captain Barbra Banda shared her thoughts on Zambia’s ambitions and the challenges that lie ahead in Group B.
Speaking to CAF Media, Banda acknowledged the difficulty of the group, which includes host nation Morocco, DR Congo, and Senegal, but remained confident in Zambia’s preparation and ambition.
“It’s a strong group, with many challenges. But that’s what we want—challenges,” Banda said. “We don’t underestimate anyone. African women’s football has come a long way. We’re focusing on ourselves, on our game. We’re aiming for the title. Last time, we finished third. This time, we want to go all the way. We want to make history.”
Zambia’s recent progress in women’s football has seen them rise among the continent’s top contenders, and Banda’s leadership has been central to that journey.
One of the most anticipated clashes of the group stage will be the showdown with Morocco, a team Zambia has faced frequently in recent years. While a rivalry seems to be budding, Banda cautioned against complacency.
“It’s true we’ve faced Morocco several times. But we’re not relying on the past,” she said. “Morocco is improving quickly. This will be a completely different match. It’s on their home ground, which will make it even harder. We’re preparing for a whole new challenge. And we’re ready.”
Zambia has been drawn into Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Senegal, and DR Congo. The Copper Queens will open their campaign on July 5 with a blockbuster clash against the Atlas Lionesses at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat. They will then face Senegal on July 9 and DR Congo on July 12, with both matches scheduled at El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia.
With confidence and focus, Banda’s words reflect a team determined not just to compete, but to rewrite the history books at this year’s WAFCON.
