Barbra Banda: “Africa Is My Foundation” – Star Eyes WAFCON Glory

Zambian captain and reigning African Women’s Player of the Year Barbra Banda is ready to lead the Copper Queens into battle at the upcoming 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with one clear goal: winning the title for her country and leaving a lasting legacy for African women’s football.

In an exclusive interview with CAF, the 25-year-old star, famed for being the first player to score back-to-back hat-tricks at the Olympic Games, spoke about her rapid rise, deep African roots, and unwavering ambition.

I am African. This continent is my foundation,” Banda declared, emphasizing her pride in representing Zambia on the continent’s biggest stage.

Though she has made headlines on the world stage, from scoring the 1000th FIFA Women’s World Cup goal to making a strong debut in the American league, Banda insists her biggest dream lies in lifting the WAFCON trophy for Zambia.

We want to make history. Last time, we finished third. This time, we want to go all the way,” she said, referencing Zambia’s Group B challenge, where they will face Morocco, DR Congo, and Senegal.

Despite the pressure that comes with her stardom, Banda says she still plays with freedom and passion. “I feel free on the pitch because I love what I do,” she said. “My goal is always to give more, to keep improving.”

Banda also praised her teammates, coaches, and Zambia’s new head coach, Nora Häuptle, for the collective spirit and progress within the team. “It’s not just me, it’s the whole team. We depend on each other,” she said.

Looking ahead, Banda dreams of lifting the WAFCON trophy for her country. “It would mean everything, for our flag, our people, and all those who believe in us.”

And to the young girl who once played barefoot in the streets of Lusaka, she has one message: “Believe in yourself. Don’t give up. Hard work pays off.”
